Sorry I had to share this, I was laughing my ass off. That ridiculous roaring shark could only have been conceived in the 1980s! I had forgotten this scene, thanks YouTube for that painful cinematic memory. Any time you see colon punctuation in a movie title you know its going to be good.

In the 23 years of this movies existence I never saw it. In my 22 years of watching horror movies I always wanted to. I remember seeing the box art in the video stores a lot in the late 80's and early 90's and being intrigued, but for reasons unknown never asked my mom to rent it. Time passed and the movie slowly disappeared from rental places and slipped from my mind altogether. That is until about seven years ago when I was reading some stuff on Clive Barker, whose three films I adore, that I came across the info that he had written the script for a film called Rawhead Rex. It all came rushing back to me. I got super excited, but it was too late the DVD was out of print by then and going for an amount I would not shell out. I thought I would never see this movie. For the next few years I read about it online and in books, and heard a lot of bad things about including some nasty comments from Barker himself and tried to convince myself it wasn't a big loss not seeing it considering all the reviews. Well... last night I had my cherry popped. And I must say that most of the reviews I'd read over the past few years where dead wrong. I fucking loved this flick!!Cheesy...yes, but it was wicked fun. And call me stupid, but an Irish trailer park? I always equated trailer trash with the shitty country I live in. The United States. The kid even had a fucking mullet. I almost lost it. It’s an exciting time in Wisconsin and the annual Muskie Madness festival is in full swing. But someone wants to catch something besides fish, a vicious killer is hooking unsuspecting fishermen and dragging them to their death in the local lake. And of course there are a group of unsuspecting teenagers on vacation looking for a good time. They provide a perfect assortment of victims for the angry angler. There are a lot of campy characters like the weird locals and the stereotypical unstable Vietnam vet who was a staple character in a lot of movies back then. Inspirations can be seen in this film from Jaws, Friday the 13th, Rambo, Meatballs and a host of other pop culture films of the day.
The horror-comedy “slasher” film Blood Hook was directed by Jim Mallon who went on to produce the cult TV show Mystery Science Theater 3000. In addition Kevin Murphy AKA Tom Servo of Mystery Science was also in the film crew of Blood Hook as the key grip. I am a huge fan of Mystery Science and have watched my VHS copies of the shows until most of them are worn out. Still I had never known Jim and Kevin were involved in Blood Hook until I was researching the movie for this review, and I’ve probably watched Blood Hook half a dozen times.

The 80s was a special era in film making and some of those films had a special cheesy goodness that can never be recreated in today’s films. Blood Hook is one of those films, and for me it brings back memories of staying up past my bed time to watch the late night movie on the local UHF channel. It’s not realistic, scary, thought provoking and not really that funny, but I always enjoy watching it. The cheese holds it all together!
