Everyone remembers An American Werewolf in London and the Howling series. I will never forget the transformation scenes in the both these movies. They were really scary to me as a kid. The special effects were creepy, even more so than today's computer generated scenes. Time lapse photography tricks and latex and rubber effects were at their pinnacle. There were also a lot of other Werewolf movies produced in the 1980's, some were blatant rip offs of these two and others were very original. Some were good and some were bad but I'll let you be the judge of that. Below is a list of all the werewolf movies of the 1980's listed in chronological order.

Just had to share this great montage from From MoviePalaceOfBlood .
A tribute to the era of horror movies on VHS, which is how many first discovered a lot of movies, and the great box art that often led people to watch a certain movie. Covers and artwork chosen for their look, style, creativity, iconic status, and sentimental value. In most cases the image of what the actual VHS cases looked like have been used. However, for very few titles I had to use a better looking poster image near-identical to it's original VHS cover, as there was a lack of good sized quality images that were actually the VHS covers.

Obscure and forgotten are my favorite kinds of 80s Horror Movies! Just when I think I've seen them all along comes one I've never heard of. Here's some you may have never heard of. In no particular order..
1. Society (1989)
There's something different about teenager Bill, or is it everyone around him? Beverly Hills upper crust is into some very weird and disturbing stuff. Society is very reminiscent of a Lovecraft movie along the lines of From Beyond or The Re Animator. There are some really creepy scenes and special effects, be sure to look for the "butt-head" scene.
2. JUST BEFORE DAWN (1981)
Five teens in the woods stalked by a machete wielding manic. Well done slasher with a good plot twist.
3. The Hand (1981)
Michael Caine is a comic illustrator pursued by his own severed hand that kills anyone that angers him. It lives. It crawls. And suddenly, it kills.
4. Terrorvision (1986)
A family's new satellite TV system starts receiving signals from another planet, and soon it becomes the passageway to an alien world.
5. The Deadly Spawn (1983)
Alien creatures invade a small town and a group of teenagers, and a little boy, try to escape from them.

When snooping kids at a school science lab discover a corpse and accidentally let it roll away, they need a replacement fast. They find one at the local hospital, but this is no ordinary corpse, this is "Bud the Chud," a cannibalistic humanoid underground dweller.
Yes there was a C.H.U.D. II and it managed to be even cheesier than the original! I think this one was intended to be more comedy than horror, either way the result was vintage 80s cheese at it's stinkiest. Now available on Amazon Instant Video HERE. In the 23 years of this movies existence I never saw it. In my 22 years of watching horror movies I always wanted to. I remember seeing the box art in the video stores a lot in the late 80's and early 90's and being intrigued, but for reasons unknown never asked my mom to rent it. Time passed and the movie slowly disappeared from rental places and slipped from my mind altogether. That is until about seven years ago when I was reading some stuff on Clive Barker, whose three films I adore, that I came across the info that he had written the script for a film called Rawhead Rex. It all came rushing back to me. I got super excited, but it was too late the DVD was out of print by then and going for an amount I would not shell out. I thought I would never see this movie. For the next few years I read about it online and in books, and heard a lot of bad things about including some nasty comments from Barker himself and tried to convince myself it wasn't a big loss not seeing it considering all the reviews. Well... last night I had my cherry popped. And I must say that most of the reviews I'd read over the past few years where dead wrong. I fucking loved this flick!!Cheesy...yes, but it was wicked fun. And call me stupid, but an Irish trailer park? I always equated trailer trash with the shitty country I live in. The United States. The kid even had a fucking mullet. I almost lost it. It’s an exciting time in Wisconsin and the annual Muskie Madness festival is in full swing. But someone wants to catch something besides fish, a vicious killer is hooking unsuspecting fishermen and dragging them to their death in the local lake. And of course there are a group of unsuspecting teenagers on vacation looking for a good time. They provide a perfect assortment of victims for the angry angler. There are a lot of campy characters like the weird locals and the stereotypical unstable Vietnam vet who was a staple character in a lot of movies back then. Inspirations can be seen in this film from Jaws, Friday the 13th, Rambo, Meatballs and a host of other pop culture films of the day.
The horror-comedy “slasher” film Blood Hook was directed by Jim Mallon who went on to produce the cult TV show Mystery Science Theater 3000. In addition Kevin Murphy AKA Tom Servo of Mystery Science was also in the film crew of Blood Hook as the key grip. I am a huge fan of Mystery Science and have watched my VHS copies of the shows until most of them are worn out. Still I had never known Jim and Kevin were involved in Blood Hook until I was researching the movie for this review, and I’ve probably watched Blood Hook half a dozen times.

The 80s was a special era in film making and some of those films had a special cheesy goodness that can never be recreated in today’s films. Blood Hook is one of those films, and for me it brings back memories of staying up past my bed time to watch the late night movie on the local UHF channel. It’s not realistic, scary, thought provoking and not really that funny, but I always enjoy watching it. The cheese holds it all together!

But what could possibly go wrong, especially with Miguel Ángel Fuentes aka Pumaman's trusty and somewhat murderous sidekick. Three young children accidentally release a horde of nasty, pint-sized demons from a hole in a suburban backyard. What follows is a classic battle between good and evil as the three kids struggle to overcome a nightmarish hell that is literally taking over the Earth.This was Stephen Dorff's debut film role. This Canadian horror film owes a big debt to POLTERGEIST (1982) in terms of "suburbia gone wild" style but it manages to hold its own with an interesting story and excellent f/x work. Another must see for any 80s Horror Fan!
The fictional The Dark Book album that Terry shows to Glen features the logo for (the very real) Canadian thrash metal band Sacrifice.

"No man can hide from his fears; as they are a part of him, they will always know where he is hiding."
A day at the fair turns into a night of terror for three young brothers. The youngest ones nightmares become a reality when three escaped mental patients/convicts decide to have a night of fun filled murder.
Usually when I find a movie from this era I don't remember having seen it until 3 minutes into the flick. This however was completely unknown and unseen for me until last night. There were quite a few killer clown/carnival movies that I have seen and I think this is one of the better ones. Thanks to a friend for turning me onto this lost classic that I had somehow missed all these years.
BTW when the clowns are in the tent removing their makeup I swear that is a Barack Obama mask on the wall behind them, I had just had to pause it! Also check out the cool 80's movie posters on the kids bedroom walls.

A long overlooked classic 80s slasher is coming to DVD/ Blu-Ray. It is available for pre-order now on Amazon. A divorcee, her son and her boyfriend are on a vacation in the beautiful but deadly Death Valley. What starts out as an ordinary, leisurely trip turns into a nightmare when they happen upon a murder and find themselves pursued by a maniac. The Walking Dead still filming nearby this week. I spotted Merle Dixon (Michael Rooker) on the set this week not sure if he is alive or it's another dream/hallucination sequence. A friend snapped this picture of him on the set October the 28th, he looks thrilled to be getting his picture taken!
